Drowning in a Sea of Idiots

I work to take care of complaints really, so I shouldn't be surprised by this one. I am. I really am.
The elevators from hell in Tower 2 are slowly being sorted out. One of the problems with them was that people were holding the elevator door open with their hands, walkers, shopping carts, canes, and whatever else they could stuff in the doorway to break the safety electric eye beam on the doors. This contributed to the breakdowns and so signs were posted in the offending elevators that asked people to use the door open button to hold the doors instead of blocking the door.
This was apparently mystifying to people without clarification. Two more small signs were added under the appropriate buttons that read 'door open' and 'door close' in the troubled elevators.
Then the open/close tags showed up in the Tower 1 elevators, which did not have the same issue.
Then people from Tower 1 complained that there were no signs telling them to use the door open button instead of their hands, canes etc.
I swear, I heard this and my first thought was "And you didn't take it as a sign of your intelligence that we didn't feel the need to tell you how to use an elevator?" Nope, knee-jerk reaction was that the people of Tower 1 were being snubbed in favour of the people from Tower 2. Granted, this does happen a lot of the time - Tower 1 being the older of the two means the repairs get done on it first and that makes the people in Tower 2 think there is favortism.
Well there is in a way, just not the way the people think there is.
People are stupid and there are more days than most lately where I am in need of an intelligence preserver.

Any smart person would step up to that set of doors, read it and go to the door, right? Wrong. With the signs near to eye level and impossible to miss, people STILL not only stand there in wait for the doors to open, but they try to force them open when they don't open automatically, blatantly IGNORING the signs.
Even staff, who know the doors are locked at 11, seem confused by the lack of opening doors.
I am convinced people are just bloody idiots and can't read or use the brain they were given to figure things out. It's too much like self-work and they need someone else to tell/show them WTF a sign for "please use other door" is.
